Artificial intelligence inside the enterprise is evolving quickly. Just a year ago, most organizations were experimenting with chat interfaces and coding assistants. Today, a new wave of AI systems is emerging: agents capable of interacting with tools, retrieving information, and executing tasks across enterprise environments.

Much of this shift is being enabled by the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open framework that allows AI systems to connect to external tools and data sources. Through MCP, an AI agent can query a database, search internal documentation, retrieve files, or trigger workflows on behalf of a user. The productivity benefits are obvious. But the security implications are only beginning to come into focus.

As enterprises adopt AI agents at scale, both organically and intentionally, MCP is quietly introducing a new attack surface in enterprise workflows. One that traditional security controls were not designed to monitor.

Most early generative AI deployments focused on conversational experiences. Employees asked questions, generated text, or summarized information. The AI produced output, but it did not interact with the environment around it. Agentic systems change that model. Instead of simply answering questions, agents can now take action by invoking tools connected through MCP. These tools might allow an agent to:

  • Retrieve documents from internal knowledge bases
  • Query enterprise databases
  • Execute local code
  • Access SaaS platforms through APIs
  • Search internal ticketing systems
  • Trigger automated workflows
  • Spawn additional resources in enterprise environments

In practice, this means the AI is no longer just generating responses; it is participating directly in enterprise operations. This capability dramatically expands what AI can do. It also expands the potential consequences if those capabilities are misused.

A new class of exploits

In many cases, attackers do not need to break anything; instead, they can manipulate how an AI agent uses the tools it already has access to. We can consider a simple example, such as an AI agent connecting to several internal tools through MCP: a documentation search system, a file storage platform, and an internal reporting database.

Each tool is legitimate and accessible under the user’s credentials. Individually, none of these capabilities is dangerous, but when combined, they create an opportunity for action chaining. A malicious prompt could guide the agent to retrieve sensitive information from one system, process it, and deliver it through another tool.

From the perspective of the infrastructure, nothing unusual occurred. Every request used legitimate credentials. Every system interaction was technically authorized, yet sensitive information may still have been exposed. This is the core challenge with MCP-driven exploits: the attack happens inside the boundaries of normal operations.

Why traditional tools struggle

Most enterprise security architectures were designed around two objectives: securing user activity and securing data. Controls focus on monitoring identity activity, inspecting network traffic, and preventing unauthorized access to sensitive information. When something deviates from expected patterns, like an unusual login location, abnormal API usage, or large data transfers, then security systems raise alerts. MCP workflows often do not trigger those signals because when an AI agent invokes a tool through MCP, it frequently does so under the authority of the user who initiated the request. The resulting activity appears as normal system usage: API calls, database queries, or document retrieval. To traditional monitoring systems, the workflow looks legitimate. What is missing is context about the AI itself—what tools it can access, what capabilities those tools provide, and how the agent is combining them and acting on them.

Without that context, security teams have limited visibility into how AI-driven workflows interact with enterprise resources.

One of the defining features of MCP is its flexibility. Developers can create connectors that allow AI agents to interact with almost any system capable of exposing an API. That flexibility is super powerful, but it also creates governance challenges.

In many environments today, organizations cannot easily answer questions such as:

  • Which MCP tools are currently available to AI agents?
  • What capabilities do those tools expose—read-only access, write operations, or automation triggers?
  • Which agents or users can invoke them?
  • What tools are agents developing autonomously for themselves, in real-time?
  • How are those tools being used in combination with one another?

Some tools may be widely used and well understood. Others may originate from experimental projects or internal development efforts. As AI adoption accelerates, these tool ecosystems can grow quickly and often without centralized visibility.

When AI workflows become an attack surface

Security teams are accustomed to monitoring systems, applications, and user activity. With AI agents, the unit of risk begins to shift from individual systems to the agents that effectively proxy AI connections to them. A single MCP-enabled interaction might involve a user submitting a request to an AI assistant, the assistant invoking multiple MCP tools, and each tool retrieving or manipulating information from different systems. The result is usually an agent combining that information into a final response. While each step may appear benign in isolation, the overall workflow can produce outcomes that organizations did not intend. In effect, AI agents create dynamic pathways across enterprise systems—pathways that can be influenced by prompts, instructions, or malicious inputs.

Building guardrails for agentic systems

The goal for most organizations is not to limit the potential of AI agents. Used responsibly, these systems can dramatically improve productivity and unlock new forms of automation, but as AI agents gain the ability to interact with enterprise systems, organizations need clearer guardrails around how those interactions occur. Several foundational steps can help reduce risk:

  1. Tool visibility. Security and IT teams should understand which MCP tools exist in their environment and what capabilities they provide.
  2. Capability restrictions. Not every tool needs full write or automation permissions. In many cases, read-only access may be sufficient.
  3. Policy-driven controls. Organizations should define clear rules about which tools AI agents can access, under what conditions, and for which users.

All these guardrails can help ensure that AI agents remain useful without introducing unnecessary exposure.

The rapid rise of AI agents is transforming how software interacts with enterprise systems. As these agents become more capable, their influence over workflows and data access will continue to grow. That shift requires a new layer of visibility that focuses not just on users or applications, but on the AI-driven processes that connect them.

For security leaders, the challenge is not just detecting malicious activity. It is understanding how autonomous systems interact with tools, data, and infrastructure across the enterprise.

The organizations that address this challenge early will be better prepared for the next phase of AI adoption, one where intelligent systems are no longer just assistants, but active participants in the work itself.
